DIVING A GIANT: The Olympia Maru WWII Wreck | Coron, Philippines 🇵🇭

Exploring the depths of Coron Bay is like diving into a time capsule. One of the most iconic sites in the Philippines is the Olympia Maru, a massive Japanese freighter that met its fate during World War II.

In this video, we take you through its cavernous cargo holds, past its coral-encrusted masts, and into the vibrant marine life that now calls this 120-meter-long giant home.

🚢 The History of the Olympia Maru
The story of the Olympia Maru began in 1927 as a commercial freighter. However, as WWII intensified, she was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Army to serve as an auxiliary aeronautical repair ship.

Her final moments began on September 24, 1944. Seeking refuge from American air raids, she anchored in the secluded waters of Coron. However, U.S. Navy Task Force 38 launched a massive surprise strike, and the Olympia Maru was hit by multiple bombs. She sank to the bottom of the bay, where she has rested upright for over 80 years.

Depth: The wreck sits upright at 25–30 meters, with the top of the masts reaching up to about 12 meters.
