Sophia or Sancta Sapientia), or Hagia Sophia Mosque ( Turkish : Ayasofya Camii ), was known in the Ottoman period as the Grand Mosque of Hagia Sophia ( Ottoman : Hagia Sophia, Grand Mosque of Sharif ). In the Byzantine era, it was called the Church of Hagia Sophia , which means the Church of Divine Wisdom . [1] It is a historical building of worship, located on the European bank in the city of Istanbul . It was established in the Byzantine era to be a cathedral for the Orthodox Christian Patriarchate , then turned into A Roman Catholic cathedral , and after the conquest of Constantinople it turned into an Ottoman mosque , and after the establishment of the Turkish Republic it turned into a museum, and finally it was announced that it had been restored as a mosque as of July 24, 2020 , after the ruling of the Supreme Administrative Court of Turkey.
