We are coming up on the five-year anniversary of Bari Weiss’s resignation from The New York Times. In her now-famous resignation letter, she concluded that intellectual curiosity had become a liability at the paper of record, after she was bullied by colleagues for not following their ideological orthodoxy.

If you’re reading this article, you know what happened next. Bari started a blog, then grew it into a company, and now it’s a bona fide new media success story with an audience of 1.3 million subscribers. The Free Press publishes investigations, podcasts, interviews, and opinion pieces from across the ideological spectrum every day, all built around its stated values of honesty, doggedness, and curiosity.

I think Bari and The Free Press team are doing something important. That is why I decided to bring my podcast Conversations with Coleman here for its relaunch. It’s also why I asked Bari to be my first guest.

I wanted to ask Bari about the ins and outs of building The Free Press, and what it has meant for her personally to become a public figure as trust in institutions hits an all-time low, as the MAGA revolution continues, and as antisemitism rises in America.

While Bari’s opinions run through the pages of The Free Press, she rarely does in-depth interviews about herself as a journalist, as the founder of a start-up, and as a mother and wife. It was a revealing discussion.
