Paul Draper was a pioneering tap dance artist, melding tap dance and ballet technique in his career as a solo tap dance artist during the 1940s and 1950s. In this documentary from December 1979 dance workshop, American Dance Machine artistic director Lee Theodore invites Draper to teach his unique approach to a select group of tap dancers and to create a group concert tap dance piece. Bob Fosse makes a cameo appearance to discuss how Paul Draper's style affected all tap dancers.
This documentary also details Draper's early beginnings, his artistic family including his Aunt Ruth Draper, (a renowned monologist), his move to Switzerland after being blackballed from working during the McCarthy era, and his process/pitfalls in creating a three part group tap dance piece with the dancers.
**includes cameo appearances by Bob Fosse and Lee Theodore, and a glimpse Draper's workshop assistant Bob Audy.
