Composer Notes:
"When writing Storm Drain, my primary goal was to create a piece that explored the many sounds I found with the steel tongue drum. I wanted to showcase it in as many contexts as possible while still following an overarching theme. This piece has 5 main phases following the lifespan of a storm: wind, rain, thunder, hail, and clearing. Flowing melodies drifting through the wind are contrasted with a groovy and brash thunderstorm that cuts the power in its wake. Each instrument is meant to act as a recurring character, that becomes familiar throughout the piece– e.g., the wind chimes appear in the wind phase and again at the end of the piece. The bass guitar, which appears in the thunderstorm phase, uniquely offers the sense of something gained as it appears in the middle of the piece and is then kept till the end. The name Storm Drain is reflective of what I’d imagine the timbral similarities of the steel tongue drum and a storm drain are."
