In December 1996, General Motors introduced the first electric car produced by an major automobile manufacturer since the early 20th century. Only 1,000 experimental EV1's were produced by GM. They were all leased and never sold outright to the public. When the leases ended, most EV1s were reclaimed by GM and destroyed. Only a few survive including this car which is on permanent display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.
