In 1986, 6 Russian Fighters Tried To Catch The SR-71.
On June 3rd, 1986, an SR-71 was doing aerial refueling west of Norway. Once done, the SR-71 left the KC-135 behind and ascended to 70,000 feet, but the jet was leaving contrails. However soon, some other contrails concerned the crew. The pilot noticed 3 contrails appearing ahead of his plane, and 3 more contrails were closing in from southward. They were Russian fighters. It was a well-planned attempt to catch the SR-71. The pilot increased the throttle, but soon, one contrail all of a sudden flew right below the Blackbird. They thought it was the Russian fighter, but it was their own contrail. The SR-71 flew out of the area, followed the Baltic corridor, and returned to the air base in the UK.
