This was a grade 6 piece about five years ago and I have been meaning to record it for some time. Darius Brubeck is the son of Dave Brubeck, the famous American jazz pianist and composer. Dave studied with Darius Milhaud, so I presume that he named his son to honour his former teacher.
This piece is described by the composer as having an 'African' feel - Darius Brubeck was a professor of jazz studies in South Africa for many years - and is marked 'absolutely steady straight eights'. The theme is notable for its use of parallel sixths, so suits a larger hand.
