Diagnostic est le 3ème volet d'un triptyque musical que le trompettiste Ibrahim Maalouf a entamé en 2007 avec Diasporas, son premier album, et enrichi avec Diachronism deux ans plus tard. Mieux qu'une continuation, ce disque est l'aboutissement d'un travail de recherche sur le jeu des harmonies, la dynamique des tonalités, leur acclimatation aux rythmes, les connivences insoupçonnables entre différents styles musicaux.
Diagnostic est surtout son oeuvre la plus personnelle, une manière de bande originale où est mise en scène avec un remarquable pouvoir de suggestion la vie affective d'un musicien qui a toujours envisagé son art comme une thérapie, avec ce que cet engagement impose de sincérité et d'abandon.
