"The Swan" is the 13th movement from the work entitled "The Carnival Of The Animals," composed in 1886 by Camille Saint-Saëns (1835 - 1921.) While serving as the professor for piano studies at a prestigious Paris music school, he enjoyed "educating" (pranking) his students by presenting modern and contemporary composers that were not on the approved curriculum. He also enjoyed composing incidental music and crafted a one-act farcical musical to be performed by his students. From this he conceived his best-known piece, "The Carnival of the Animals." This 14 movement suite is a noble comedy where there are unexpected and irresistible finds. Filled with whimsical ideas, the instrumentation tends toward buffoonery, but soon embraces grace and even science. The Swan is the best known work from Saint-Saëns and is played by all students of the cello. It also works well on the classical guitar. I had a lot of fun playing this famous melody on my contrabajo (Esteve PS-75.) This made the the ugly ducking sound delightfully correct for this piece.
