Kinmen (金門), also known as Quemoy, is a group of islands under the administration of the Republic of China (Taiwan), situated just 10 km (6.2 mi) east of Xiamen, Fujian, in the People's Republic of China (PRC), across Xiamen Bay. The county includes the main island of Kinmen and several smaller islets, as well as the more distant Wuqiu Township. Kinmen's strategic location has made it a focal point in Cross-Strait relations, experiencing numerous military confrontations, particularly during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1958.

Historically, Kinmen has been inhabited for thousands of years, with significant settlement and development during the Ming dynasty. It served as a base for Koxinga in his campaign against the Dutch in Taiwan. The island has changed hands several times, most notably being occupied by Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War before returning to ROC control after World War II. Despite military tensions, travel restrictions between Kinmen and Taiwan were lifted in 1994, and a direct ferry route to Xiamen was established in 2001, symbolizing a step towards closer Cross-Strait relations.

The name "Kinmen" (金門) translates to "Golden Gate," reflecting its historical significance and strategic importance. The island is known for its military history, including the Battle of Guningtou, and has become a symbol of the complex relationship between Taiwan and the PRC. Despite its contentious past, Kinmen has developed into a vibrant community, with a focus on tourism and economic development, benefiting from its unique position as a gateway between Taiwan and mainland China.
