The BUTTONHOLE STITCH is also known as BUTTON STITCH (English), KNOPFLOCHSTICH (German), PUNTO FESTON (Spanish).
The stitch forms a close row of loops that will prevent the fabric from fraying in case the material will be cut (as in Richelieu work, for example).
