Driving in Germany: Autobahn A5 E35 from Heidelberg to Karlsruhe

In this video you can drive along on the A5 direction South from Heidelberg to Karlsruhe. The A5 is an important Autobahn originating in the heart of Germany just South of Kassel, running all the way to the border with Switzerland and France in the Southwest at Freiburg im Breisgau.

On the way the A5 passes some large and important cities like Frankfurt am Main, Heidelberg / Mannheim and Karlsruhe. You can see the motorway handles significant numbers of traffic in this video, which was made on a regular Sunday afternoon in 2021. Even with almost no truck traffic there are traffic jams and slow driving everywhere.

At the end of the video, we are immediately greeted by traffic as we enter the A8 direction Stuttgart from Dreieck Karlsruhe. The bottleneck down at Pforzheim is causing traffic well over 20 kilometers away, on a sunday at that! I like to avoid this route when I can because the driving is just very tedious over long distances with all the sudden braking and the trains in the left lane. The A6 - A81 route in the direction of Stuttgart is usually faster.
