Maurice Obrejan, déporté de France au camp de Gogolin

Maurice Obrejan a été déporté à l’âge de 17 ans avec sa mère, Golda, et ses 3 frères et sœur, Albert, Jacques et Jeanne. Son père, Srul, est un résistant recherché. Maurice et sa famille sont déportés par le convoi 32 parti le 14 septembre 1942 du camp de Drancy à destination du camp d’Auschwitz-Birkenau. Il est débarqué à Kosel alors que le reste de sa famille reste dans le convoi. Maurice est emmené au camp de Gogolin où il travaille à la construction d’une autoroute. Au bout de dix jours, il est transféré au camp de Johannsdorf pour travailler dans les champs. A la fin d’octobre 1942, il est envoyé au camp de Blechhammer. Maurice est affecté aux travaux difficiles à l’extérieur du camp. En 1943, il est transféré dans une usine où il doit seconder un ingénieur sur des installations de systèmes électriques. Il en profite pour réaliser du sabotage et aider un prisonnier de guerre américain dans des missions d’espionnage. En janvier 1945, Maurice est évacué par une marche de la mort qui le fait passer par le camp de Gross-Rosen et finit au camp de Buchenwald. Huit jours plus tard, il est transféré au camp de Langenstain. Il évite une nouvelle marche de la mort en se cachant parmi les cadavres. Le camp est libéré le 11 avril 1945 par les Américains. Maurice est envoyé à l’hôpital et rapatrié en France le 17 mai 1945. Sa mère et ses frères et sœur ne rentrent pas de déportation. Il apprend que son père a été déporté par le convoi 40 parti le 4 novembre 1942 vers le camp d’Auschwitz-Birkenau. Il ne revient pas non plus. En 1948, il part chez un oncle en Belgique et revient en France en 1953. Après la guerre, Maurice rejoint l’Amicale de Blechhammer puis celle d’Auschwitz. Il écrit ses mémoires en 1994 : « L’étrange destinée d’un homme trois fois français » (éd. La Pensée Universelle).

Maurice Obrejan was deported at the age of 17 with his mother, Golda, and 3 siblings, Albert, Jacques and Jeanne. His father, Srul, was a wanted resistance fighter. Maurice and his family were deported by convoy 32, which left the Drancy camp on September 14, 1942, bound for the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. He was unloaded at Kosel, while the rest of his family remained on the convoy. Maurice is taken to the Gogolin camp, where he works on the construction of a freeway. After ten days, he was transferred to the Johannsdorf camp to work in the fields. At the end of October 1942, he was sent to the Blechhammer camp. Maurice was assigned to hard labor outside the camp. In 1943, he was transferred to a factory, where he assisted an engineer with the installation of electrical systems. He took advantage of this to carry out sabotage and help an American prisoner of war with espionage missions. In January 1945, Maurice was evacuated on a death march that took him through the Gross-Rosen camp and ended up in the Buchenwald camp. Eight days later, he was transferred to the Langenstain camp. He avoided another death march by hiding among the corpses. The camp was liberated by the Americans on April 11, 1945. Maurice was sent to hospital and repatriated to France on May 17, 1945. His mother and siblings do not return from deportation. He learns that his father was deported by convoy 40, which left on November 4, 1942, for the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. He didn't come back either. In 1948, he went to live with an uncle in Belgium, returning to France in 1953. After the war, Maurice joined the Amicale de Blechhammer and later the Amicale d'Auschwitz. He wrote his memoirs in 1994: “L'étrange destinée d'un homme trois fois français” (published by La Pensée Universelle).
