This is actually my first time picking up gear from smaller boutique makers — the Dreadbox Artemis and the Neon Egg Planetarium 3. I just got them last week, so I’m still getting used to both of them, but honestly… they’ve already blown me away.
Dreadbox is a relatively young company from Greece, and the Artemis is a 6-voice synth with two VCOs per voice, plus this really cool cross-fadeable waveform system, and built-in digital delay and reverb. For an analog synth, it’s surprisingly affordable — and even without the onboard effects, the sound is massive, almost cinematic. It really competes with some of the higher-priced analogs out there. The interface is pretty minimal, but it can still create an incredible range of tones. I’ll be posting some sound demos of this one soon.
The Neon Egg Planetarium 3 is another boutique gem, this time from the U.K. It combines stereo reverb, chorus, tape-style delay, and sidechain compression all in one box. I first noticed it in a close-up shot during one of Joris Voorn’s videos — it immediately caught my attention. It’s priced like an ordinary effects unit, but the sound and texture it produces are anything but ordinary.
Overall, I’d say both of these pieces deliver amazing value for the price.
