Sony 30mm f3,5 Macro Lens. This Sony lens is a macro lens that is now over 10 years old! But is it still any good? Is it worth buying in 2022? Let’s go have some fun with it and find out.

The Sony E-Mount 30mm F3.5 macro lens is a macro lens with a 1:1 magnification ability bringing you super close to your subject. It’s an APS-C lens, so when accompanied with something like a Sony a6000, Sony a6100, Sony a6600, Sony a6400, Sony a6500, Sony a6300, etc, it’s stays true to 30mm lens length, but with something like a full frame camera, you get a strong vignette on the sides. So, with the APS-C/Super 35mm compensation turned on, you do get a crop factor which turns the lens into something more like a 45mm lens.

Its minimum F-Stop is f3,5 and maximum is f22,0 with the sweet spot of around the f8,0. Here seems to be the best place for true colour, best contrast, sharpness across the image, etc. You obviously lose some of the bokeh but you preserve the quality of the image at its best.

The Sony 30mm f3,5 macro lens is based on a metal lens mount but without weather sealing and it only weighs 138 grams. The autofocus motor works silently and quickly but there is a little bit of hunting as it tries to find the focus point. But it’s not bad though.

The lens doesn’t have a lens stabilization built in which is a shame but what can you expect at this price point.

And perhaps my favorite bit about this lens, is the closest focal distance. It is a macro so it is expected but 20mm from the end of the lens to the subject. You can get real close up and personal to the subject.
