World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative, Richard Banda, says one in five infections in Africa is resistant to antibiotics, making it the second most affected region worldwide.
Banda stressed this trend is particularly concerning because each time a routine infection becomes difficult to treat, and each time an antibiotic fails, the consequences extend beyond individual patients to health systems, food production, economies and families, stressing the need for urgent, coordinated action.
He was speaking at the Ministry of Health and Social Services' observation of World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week in Windhoek on Tuesday.
