Following the successful National Geographic Explorer television documentary “The Voices of Doo Wop” on TBS in 1994, vocal group harmony veterans and business partners Arthur Crier and Eugene Tompkins formed the Morrisania Revue with other Bronx performers and recorded a highly acclaimed album. Gaining momentum, four of the members of the “Voices of Doo Wop” comprised a quartet that appeared on NBC-TV’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” for a musical comedy skit with the host and his sidekick, Andy Richter on January 6, 1995. Singing acapella were Bobby Mansfield (1937-2013), the original lead singer of the Wrens, Waldo “Champ” Champen, who recorded with acts including the Cadillacs, Bachelors, Montereys, Supremes and 5 Delights), Grover “Dean” Barlow (1934-2013), original lead singer of the Crickets, Bachelors and Montereys, and bass Arthur Crier (1935-2004) of the Mellows, Halos, Chimes and others. The insulting lyrics were given to the group, dubbed “The Four Gentlemen”, by the show’s writers and the arrangements were their own. In 2025, Champen, at 91 years of age, is the lone survivor.
