Gamma Ray Burst's Disappearing Act Has Astronomers Rethinking Theory
The latest observations of a kilonova , a new type of cosmic explosion, have astronomers rethinking what they know about Gamma-ray bursts. A team of researchers used a set of satellite observatories to study the event, which was detected by NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The powerful burst lasted less than two seconds and was located in a galaxy nearly 6 billion light-years from Earth.
