Have you ever been betrayed or felt someone was plotting against you? Maybe it was a girlfriend, wife, family member, a close friend, or even a coworker. It’s a gut-wrenching experience that can leave you feeling isolated and vulnerable.
In the most extreme case I can think of, you might recall the historical figure Alexander the Great. He was known to take drastic measures against anyone who plotted against him—often resulting in imprisonment or even death. Now, let me be clear: I’m not recommending that anyone resort to such extreme actions! The point here is to illustrate how serious a plot against you can be. Betrayal trauma is real, and it can weigh heavily on your heart and mind.
I want to share a personal story with you today that sheds light on my experience with betrayal and how it fueled my journey of self-improvement. A while back, I discovered that some of my own family members were conspiring against me. And at work, there was an employee who, despite my trust and support, turned out to be plotting behind my back. I remember feeling that sting of betrayal trauma as I balanced the decision between vengeance and mercy.
What did I do in response? Initially, I chose mercy. I wanted to show compassion and extend an olive branch, thinking that perhaps this could lead to self-improvement for both of us. But, surprise! That approach only uncovered deeper layers of their deceit. I realized that sometimes, kindness can be misinterpreted as weakness, and those who betray you may see it as an opportunity to take advantage of your goodwill.
So, what do you do when faced with betrayal trauma? I came to a shocking but liberating conclusion: you cut them off and destroy their influence over you. And when I say destroy, I don’t mean in a violent or vengeful way—think of it more as a strategic withdrawal. As one friend famously put it, “If you shit on me, I’ll bury you in shit later.” It’s a harsh sentiment, but it encapsulates the idea of showing no mercy.
It’s essential to recognize these toxic relationships can act like a cancer, slowly growing and consuming your mental health and overall well-being. As stated in the 48 Laws of Power, you have to remove these individuals from your life, no matter how painful it may be. The longer you allow betrayal trauma to linger, the more it will eat away at your happiness and stability.
Through this process, I’ve learned to focus on self-improvement. Each snub and betrayal became a lesson. Every time someone plotted against me, I reassessed my circle and worked on becoming a better version of myself. I turned that betrayal trauma into fuel for self-improvement. If someone wants to bring you down, let it motivate you to rise higher. It becomes less about them and more about your growth, your goals, and your determination to succeed.
Betrayal can lead you to assess who you truly are and what you want in life. It teaches you a harsh but valuable lesson about trust, resilience, and self-worth. In the end, this painful chapter of your life can usher in an era of unparalleled self-improvement. It forces you to redefine your boundaries and prioritize healthy relationships—both with yourself and others.
I encourage you all to think critically about your relationships. Are there people in your life who’re secretly wishing for your downfall? Are they plotting against you, masquerading as friends or family? Don’t be afraid to take action. Cut off the toxic influences before they have the chance to become a cancer in your life. Focus on self-improvement, letting go of betrayal trauma, and embracing the power of your own journey.
At the end of the day, remember: it’s okay to feel hurt by betrayal. But don’t allow that hurt to immobilize you. Instead, let it propel you forward. Choose to elevate yourself and surround yourself with those who genuinely support and uplift you. Nobody has the right to bring negativity into your life, and recognizing this is a significant step toward self-improvement.
