In this session, Javed Ahmad Ghamidi answers a series of questions on the concept of fitrah—the innate human nature that, according to the Qur’an, forms the foundation of moral awareness and religious guidance. He explains how fitrah refers to the natural instincts and intuitions placed by God in every human being, such as the recognition of right and wrong, the inclination towards justice, compassion, truthfulness, and the awareness of accountability. Ghamidi outlines how religion does not seek to suppress this nature but to nurture and guide it, so that human beings live in harmony with their moral compass.
Drawing on the Qur’an and the Prophet’s teachings, he clarifies the relationship between revelation and human fitrah: revelation confirms and directs what is already ingrained in the human soul. He also responds to common confusions—for example, whether cultural norms can be mistaken for fitrah, how moral corruption affects it, and why recognizing fitrah is essential for a proper understanding of Islam. With his characteristic clarity and reasoning, Ghamidi Sahib shows that faith must be built upon this God-given foundation of human nature.
This discussion is part of the Response to 23 Questions series produced by the Ghamidi Center of Islamic Learning, which aims to provide balanced, evidence-based answers to fundamental questions about religion.
