At 69° north, Lofoten is shaped by one of the world’s harshest natural environments. Yet small fishing communities have survived here for centuries, living closely with the sea and mountains. This film follows a year in Lofoten, portraying its people and their deep connection to nature.
Winter marks the vital cod-fishing season, when huge shoals arrive from the Barents Sea and thousands of tons of fish secure the region’s yearly income. Drying racks fill the villages, and even children earn money cutting cod tongues. Tourism is now the second major industry, with old fishermen’s cabins restored for visitors — like those run by lifelong local Ola in Svolvær.
With spring, the fishermen return and the landscape turns green. Farmers like Ragnhild move their sheep into the mountains for summer grazing. In Henningsvær, the tourism season begins, and guides such as Ragnar take guests to witness the majestic sea eagle — northern Europe’s largest bird of prey.
