STORYLINE:
Distraught Italians watched their World Cup dreams crumble on Tuesday after a golden goal in extra time clinched a 2-1 victory for championship hosts South Korea.
Fans gathered around big screens and television sets hoping to see their compatriots progress to the quarter finals.
But in a tournament characterised by upsets, Italy was the latest highly touted team to be eliminated.
The Italians were reduced to 10 men 13 minutes into extra time when Francesco Totti was called for diving by Ecuadorean referee Byron Moreno.
Fans later watched in dismay as Ahn Jung-hwan, who earlier missed a penalty shot, scored the golden goal in the 117th minute on a pinpoint header.
Many after the match blamed the referee for Italy's defeat.
South Korea, which hadn't even won a game at five previous trips to soccer's biggest event, will now play Spain in the round of eight in Gwangju on Saturday.
The South Koreans matched the feat of their northern neighbours, who became the first Asian team to advance to the quarterfinals in 1966, also by shocking Italy.
