Guinevere Pendragon | Soldier On

AU story after 5x13.

The story:
It picks up immidiatly after 5x13. After the loss of her beloved husband Arthur, Gwen is devastated. She spends her days mourning his loss and remembering the good times they shared. But she doesn't get much time to grief, while Camelot is still not safe for Morgana's remaining troops. She rides off to find her friend M.erlin, who hasn't returned after the death of his king. Together with Gaius they come up with a strategy for battle. And it works. Camelot is victorious and once again safe. Afterwards Gwen knows that she is able to be a good queen for Camelot and when she's in the throne room she feels like she might be at peace with Arthur's death, someday.
But then, everything changes when Gwen finds out she's pregnant from the last night she spend with her husband. She gives birth to a son and names him Arthur. When he comes of age, he is crowned king of Camelot. He's a lot like his father, which reassures Gwen that he'll make a great king someday. But she does tell him to be less reckless, something her husband Arthur had to learn as well. One day, after a walk through Camelot, Gwen suddenly collapses. Arthur brings her to Gaius, who tells him that Gwen's time is up and that her breath is leaving her. They take Gwen to the lake of Avalon, to lay her to rest alongside her husband. There, she finally passes away. When she opens her eyes, she sees Arthur again. Finally they are reunited.

When I saw the theme of this round, I started asking myself: whose story wasn't satisfying enough for me? Whose story do I want to tell? And the only answer for me was Guinevere's. Her story ended with Arthur's death. She had to rule a kingdom on her own, while the only reason she wanted to become queen was to be with Arthur. So I wanted to explore her life after his death. I figured that Morgana's remaining army would still cause some unrest and that Gwen would try and find her friend M.erlin, who loved Arthur as much as she did. But the most important part for me was her pregnancy. She needed a new reason to live and her son would be an important one. After all, being queen wouldn't be a life she'd chose for herself if it hadn't been for Arthur. And with a son, Gwen would both be happy and the Pendragon legacy would live on. I ended with Guinevere's death because I felt like it was important for her to be reunited with Arthur, in the end. This felt like more closure than the M.erlin finale gave me and it's also my headcanon for what happened after the show ended.

This is my entry for the seventh and last round of The Hunger Games Contest. I had a great time making my videos, watching others' videos and coming up with ideas for the themes of every round. I'm really glad I decided to enter and I'm amazed that I made it this far. It's been a great journey! I wish the best of luck to my fellow two finalists, who are both great editors.
