In massive mills, the rock is crushed into a fine, talcum-like powder, the main ingredient for the core.
The powder is "dried" in a huge rotating furnace in a process called *calcination*, making it "thirsty" for water.
An endless "sandwich" is formed on a conveyor: a layer of paper, a stream of gypsum slurry, and a top layer of paper.
The sheets travel through a multi-story drying chamber to remove excess moisture and gain their final strength.
