On November 9, 1967, First Lieutenant James Taylor displayed fearless heroism in Vietnam—saving lives again and again under relentless enemy fire.
During a fierce assault by the 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry, Americal Division, LT Taylor’s unit was ambushed by recoilless rifles, mortars, and automatic weapons. When an armored cavalry vehicle was struck, wounding all five crewmen and threatening to explode, LT Taylor sprinted through intense fire and dragged each man to safety.
Moments later, a second vehicle was hit. Taylor once again charged forward under direct fire, rescuing the crew just before the vehicle erupted in flames. Despite being wounded by a nearby mortar blast, he refused evacuation, returned to his command vehicle, and moved the casualty evacuation zone closer to the front—accelerating life-saving treatment for others.
When his own vehicle was ambushed from just 50 yards away, Taylor engaged and eliminated the enemy crew with precision machine-gun fire.
As another armored vehicle was struck, Taylor went forward a third time—retrieving the wounded, loading them aboard, and delivering them safely for evacuation.
His unwavering bravery and refusal to abandon his men, even when wounded, saved numerous lives and inspired all who witnessed his actions. For his extraordinary courage and leadership, James Taylor was awarded the Medal of Honor.
