Title: Cheshire θ Terms, Aharonov-Bohm Effects, and Axions
Abstract:
I'll discuss unusual θ terms that can appear in field theories that allow global vortices. These `Cheshire θ terms' induce Aharonov-Bohm effects for some particles that move around vortices, and can lead to observable effects in e.g. axion cosmology. I'll then explain how Cheshire θ terms fit into a general approach to constructing θ terms in QFTs. This approach produces all the standard θ terms discussed in textbooks, and also produces Cheshire θ terms as well as many other generalized θ terms.
