In this video, we discuss where the sources of variation come from in longitudinal data, and how they are accounted for in marginal models (e.g., at the population level, without formal distributional assumptions). We also discuss the shortcomings of this based on wanting individual effects (relating back to where variation comes from). Using this as motivation, we introduce the idea of modelling at the individual level through individualized coefficients, which gives us the concept of mixed effects models.
