Whirlpool is a 1950 American film noir thriller directed by Otto Preminger and written by Ben Hecht and Andrew Solt, adapted from the 1946 novel Methinks the Lady... by Guy Endore. The film stars Gene Tierney, Richard Conte, José Ferrer and Charles Bickford, and features Constance Collier in her final film role. Its plot follows the kleptomaniac wife of a wealthy Los Angeles psychoanalyst who, after a chance meeting with a hypnotist, is charged with a violent murder.
Plot:
Whirlpool follows Ann Sutton, a seemingly perfect society wife who secretly suffers from kleptomania. Ashamed of her condition, she hides it from her husband, a respected psychiatrist.
Ann falls under the influence of David Korvo, a charming but dangerous hypnotist who manipulates her weakness for his own criminal schemes. Through hypnosis, deception, and psychological control, Korvo draws Ann into a murder case, putting her sanity, freedom, and marriage at risk.
The film explores themes of psychological manipulation, guilt, trust, and the darker side of the human mind, all wrapped in classic film noir tension.
