EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #99: ROUTH

The next location along the A1035 to the East from Tickton, welcome to the parish of Routh located within the valley of the River Hull. An unusual name, Routh has been recorded in the past as “Ruda” or “Rue”, the latter particularly so in the Middle Ages. It’s of Scandinavian origin and seems to describe the location as a clearing or a tract of rough ground. That makes sense because this part of the East Riding used to be covered by an ancient forest, not too dissimilar to that of Sherwood. Considerable remains of trees were dug out of the carrs – the marshy areas around the village - in the 19th century. The parish is almost entirely bounded by drains.

Routh, as a village has been rebuilt a few times. Do you remember the Denisons who we discussed way back in the Londesborough episode? Its most modern rebuilding was by them in the late 19th century. They’re just one name associated with Routh. Early in the 20th century the Sammans built four pairs of cottages here and there’s a landmark here that bears the Samman name.


Whilst the main cluster of buildings lines the A1035, there is a small handful away from the main road, an area which includes the lovely church of All Saints. And Routh has not just one, but two country parks which attract visitors to this tiny corner of East Yorkshire. We’ll discuss them too in the episode.
