Papakōlea Green Sand Beach, located on the Big Island of Hawaii, is one of only four green sand beaches in the world. The beach is known for its unique green sand, which is primarily composed of olivine, a mineral that forms from volcanic activity.
Trail Details:
Distance and Difficulty
Roundtrip Distance: 5.6 miles (9.0 km)
Elevation Gain: 275 feet
Trail Type: Out-and-back
The trail is considered moderately challenging due to its dry and windy conditions. It is mostly flat but can be dusty and lacks shade, making it essential to prepare adequately.
Accessing the Beach
There are three main ways to reach Papakōlea Green Sand Beach:
Hiking: The most common method, which is free. The trail starts at the end of South Point Road and leads to the beach.
4WD Vehicle: Driving is possible but risky due to rough terrain. Rental agreements often prohibit driving on these roads.
Shuttle Service: Locals may offer rides in off-road vehicles for a fee, typically around $20-$30 per person.
What to Expect
The hike features a long stretch of exposed terrain with little variation in scenery. It is advisable to start early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the heat. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection, as there are no amenities along the trail.
Swimming at the beach can be dangerous due to strong surf, so caution is advised. Enjoy the unique green sand and take care to leave no trace behind.
