Aotearoa New Zealand’s progress on eliminating racial discrimination and promoting racial equality was reviewed in November 2025 in Geneva by the United Nations Committee on Eliminating Racial Discrimination
In 1972, New Zealand signed up to the UN’s International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD). This requires the government to take action to eliminate racism and racial discrimination and promote understanding between all races in Aotearoa New Zealand. The UN CERD Committee last reviewed New Zealand in 2017.
Under CERD, the government is required to regularly report on its progress at eliminating racial discrimination and supporting Indigenous peoples, ethnic and religious minority groups to enjoy their rights and freedoms. As the National Human Rights Institution, the Commission submits an independent ‘shadow report’ to the UN CERD Committee.
