Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt (1858-1919) was the 26th President of the United States, serving from 1901 to 1909 after ascending to the presidency following William McKinley's assassination. Born into a wealthy New York family, Roosevelt overcame childhood asthma and physical frailty through rigorous exercise and outdoor activities, developing the robust persona that would define his public image. Before his presidency, he served as a New York State Assemblyman, rancher in the Dakota Territory, Police Commissioner of New York City, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and Governor of New York. His military service during the Spanish-American War as leader of the "Rough Riders" cavalry regiment made him a national hero. As president, Roosevelt championed progressive reforms including trust-busting (breaking up monopolies), conservation of natural resources, and consumer protection legislation like the Pure Food and Drug Act. He mediated the 1902 coal strike, established national parks and forests, and pursued an aggressive foreign policy exemplified by the construction of the Panama Canal and his "speak softly and carry a big stick" diplomacy. Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for mediating the Russo-Japanese War. After leaving office, he founded the Progressive "Bull Moose" Party and ran unsuccessfully for president in 1912, splitting the Republican vote. He was known for his energetic personality, wide-ranging interests including natural history and writing, and his distinctive speaking style. Roosevelt died in 1919 at age 60, leaving behind a legacy as one of America's most dynamic and influential presidents who significantly expanded the power and scope of the federal government.
