Even in well selected patients, stricture recurs in 20% patients after first OIU/DVIU and more than 50% after a second attempt. Some strategies help decreasing this risk by just a fraction but with their own risk.
Like Self catheterisation. It may help stabilise but if done forcefully over a coming back stricture, it can cause bleeding and false passage. hence it is not for all
In my practice I suggest self caliberation to those patients who are motivated for it.
Mitomycin is a chemotherapy drug which can have its own side effects, but has shown some promise.
