Honda’s CR-V has been a big seller in the compact crossover segment since it arrived for the 1996 model year. Now that Americans prefer crossovers to sedans, Honda wants to take advantage of that change by launching a subcompact crossover, the HR-V, which debuted for the 2016 model year. The HR-V uses the same platform as the Honda Fit, and it shares the Fit’s comfortable, flexible, cargo-friendly second-row Magic Seats.
All 2018 HR-Vs get a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder that produces 141 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque, and all trims are available with front- or all-wheel drive. Front-wheel drive LX and EX trims get an enjoyable 6-speed manual standard, but a continuously variable transmission with paddle shifters is standard in all 4-wheel-drive HR-Vs and the EX-L trims. Estimated mileage ranges from 25 to 27 mpg city, 31 to 34 mpg highway. Our reviewer liked the HR-V, but wished it had more up-to-date tech, particularly advanced safety features and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The smallest Honda crossover packs big-car utility in a city-car package.
Introduced for 2016, the subcompact HR-V sits below the compact CR-V and midsize Pilot. It’s based on the Fit hatchback but offers higher ground clearance, optional all-wheel drive, and a more premium cabin. It’s also thousands of dollars less than the popular CR-V. When priced above $27,000, however, you might consider upgrading your seat.
