We went over the new road between Palmerston North and Woodville yesterday (24th June 2025). It had opened on 11th June, so had been open for less than two weeks.
We went over west to east first, ie Palmerston North to Woodville. Then turned around and came back east to west, ie Woodville to Palmerston North. I’ve put both videos together back-to-back.
We are VERY impressed with the road. It's two lanes each way for the entire new road. It’s so much quicker than the old (closed) road through the Manawatu Gorge, and also much faster than the steep winding Saddle road. It has been a major engineering project.
There are some nice stopping areas/rest areas you stop at if you want to look around, most (if not all) with seats. There are also toilets at the first rest area on the Palmerston North end.
Background (from NZTA website):
A major slip in April 2017 left SH3 through the Manawatu Gorge impassable. A new road has been built over the Ruahine Range, to provide a safe, resilient, and efficient route between Woodville and Ashhurst. The new highway opened to traffic on 11 June 2025.
