If you've ever longed to hear the sound of Bix's voice, give a listen to his heart. It's here, complete with all the elements of an intensely personal conversation. There is no holding back.
Recorded along with Frank Trumbauer and his Orchestra at New York's Okeh studio on May 13, 1927, it is Bix's longest recorded solo and, to many, his most emotional. Australian author and journalist Clive James described it by saying, "...and always there is a piercing sadness to it, as if the natural tone of the cornet, the instrument of reveille, were the first sob before weeping."
Many thanks to the Upper Mississippi Valley Photo Archives for the images of Bix's hometown of Davenport, Iowa used in the making of this video. They have captivated me many an hour.
