Hotel Das Kranzbach, Upper Bavaria - luxurious hideaway in a romantic secluded mountain valley

The luxurious wellness hotel "Das Kranzbach" is located in Upper Bavaria near Krün/Klais, about 15 km (9,3 ml) from the well-known German holiday resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In a beautiful, secluded location on a large mountain meadow, a castle in the old English style, the newly built garden wing and the modern pool house await guests seeking peace and quiet. Wonderful views of the Karwendel, Zugspitze and Wetterstein mountains form the perfect backdrop for a few relaxing days of wellness.

But why is there an English castle in a romantic Bavarian mountain valley at 1.030 m (3.300 ft) above sea level? Mary Isabel Portman, a rich aristocrat and talented violinist from London, wanted to build a country house here in 1913. On behalf of the woman, who was self-willed and independent for the time, construction began on a natural stone country house in the style of the English Arts and Crafts movement. The "English Castle", as the locals called it, was completed in 1915. But the First World War ruined Mary Portman's plans. She had to leave Germany and never saw the finished building. After a very eventful history, the castle was renovated and expanded in 2003 and reopened in 2007 as the "Das Kranzbach" wellness hotel. Today, the complex essentially consists of the "Mary Portman House" (the old castle), the equally historic gatehouse, the newly built garden wing and the modern pool house. The "Kranzbach" is one of the best wellness hotels in Germany.
We enter the hotel through the Mary Portman House. Here, in addition to rooms and salons in English style, there is also the reception. Our room in the "Deluxe double" category is in the modern garden wing. It is spacious and comfortable, pleasantly furnished and, above all, wonderfully quiet. This quietness is the hotel's trademark. This also means that there are no tour groups, no celebrations, seminars or similar and children under 12 are not welcome. Dogs are allowed, however.
The modern pool house offers 5 indoor and outdoor pools, 8 saunas and steam baths, relaxation rooms and of course the large sunbathing lawn. The spa rituals for two in the private spa suite are something very special. We were pampered with a massage and a bath.
We are provided with all the culinary delights. The superior half-board included in the room price is very tasty. The day begins with an extensive breakfast buffet. At lunchtime there is a light lunch of soups, salads, sausage and cheese in the pool house or in the restaurant. In the afternoon, delicious cakes tempt us to eat far too much. In the evening, a 6-course menu including a salad and cheese buffet awaits us. And if you still have room in your stomach, you can help yourself to yummy homemade chocolate at the restaurant exit.
Theoretically, you could work off all the calories in the fitness center. But the weather is nice, so we decide to take a walk to Elmau Castle, about 2,5 km (1,5 ml) away, which is now a very classy and correspondingly expensive hotel. No wonder, the powerful of the Western world have already been guests here at two G7 summits!

We liked this:
The really quiet location and the beautiful surroundings.
The beautiful room that had space for all the Travelling Pigs🐷!
The food was extremely delicious.
The service was very friendly and almost always perfect. Only at the afternoon buffet in the Herb garden restaurant did we never manage to get a coffee.

We didn't like this so much:
It's relatively expensive. The proximity to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Elmau has to be paid for.

Our conclusion:
A fabulous hotel in a wonderful, absolutely quiet environment. Ideal for relaxing and unwinding.
