Corrado Cavalli plays Noël Provençal " Pâtre des montagnes" by Jean Bouvard on the Casavant Organ at Saint John Cantius Church in Chicago.
This unpublished Noël features the traditional French Christmas melody "Pâtre des montagnes," which originates from the region of Provence.
This charming composition is structured in the theme-and-variations form, a common style found in Christmas music within the French organ tradition.
The theme is introduced with a five-part harmonization.
The first variation is a bicinium.
In the second variation, the theme is presented in the tenor line.
The third variation takes on a scherzo form, featuring more modern harmonies and a rhythm enhanced by overlapping ternary pulsation in the right hand over binary pulsation in the left hand.
The fourth variation showcases a tender Adagio on the Voix Céleste of the swell.
The final variation resembles a carillon, where the main melody is in 6/8 time, supported by a festive sixteenth-note flow in 2/4 time.
I would like to express my gratitude to Maestro Jacques Kauffmann for graciously providing me with a copy of the manuscript.
