During the early Makkan period, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was spreading the message of Islam — the oneness of Allah, life after death, and accountability. The Quraysh, seeing more people drawn to his message, grew desperate to discredit him. They wanted a way to prove he wasn’t a true Prophet.
To challenge him, the Quraysh sent Al-Nadr ibn al-Harith and ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt to the Jewish rabbis in Madinah, who were known for their knowledge of previous scriptures. The Jews told them:
“Ask Muhammad about three things — if he can answer, he is a true Prophet.
The story of some young men who disappeared in ancient times (the People of the Cave).
The story of a man who traveled to the east and west (Dhul-Qarnayn).
And about the nature of the soul (ar-Ruh).”
🕋 The Prophet’s Promise
When the Quraysh returned and asked the Prophet ﷺ these questions, he replied:
“I will tell you tomorrow.”
However, he did not say “In shā’ Allāh” (if Allah wills) — a phrase that acknowledges that everything happens by Allah’s permission.
Days passed… then a week… and there was no revelation from Allah. The Quraysh began mocking the Prophet ﷺ, saying, “Where is the answer you promised us?”
For 15 days, no verses came. The Prophet ﷺ felt deep sadness and concern, fearing that people would doubt the truth.
🌤️ Revelation Descends
Finally, Angel Jibreel (AS) came down with Surah Al-Kahf — bringing both comfort and lesson. The Surah not only answered the three questions but also reminded the Prophet ﷺ:
“And never say of anything, ‘I will do that tomorrow,’ without adding, ‘if Allah wills.’”
(Qur’an 18:23–24)
This taught the eternal principle of Tawakkul (trust in Allah) and acknowledging His will in all matters.
📜 The Stories Within Surah Al-Kahf
The People of the Cave (Ashabul Kahf) — A group of faithful young men who fled a tyrant ruler for the sake of their belief in one God. Allah protected them by making them sleep in a cave for centuries.
The Man with Two Gardens — A parable teaching humility and the dangers of arrogance and attachment to worldly wealth.
Musa (AS) and Khidr — A journey that teaches patience and the limits of human knowledge.
Dhul-Qarnayn — A powerful ruler who traveled the earth with justice, symbolizing leadership guided by faith.
