South Devon Railway Winter Gala with GWR 2807, Bagnall 2572 ‘Judy’ Hunslet 1589 ‘Newstead’ & MORE!

A great Friday spent with ‪‪@southwalestrainspotting5090‬ ‬for the first day of the 2026 South Devon Railway Winter Steam Gala today. The gala starred GWR 28XX class heavy freight locomotive 2807 visiting from the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway, Hunslet Works No.1589 ‘Newstead’ The Lost Engine and Bagnall 2572 ‘Judy’, courtesy of the Bodmin Railway. This diminutive locomotive was built for moving China Clay wagons at Par docks, meaning it had to be very short to allow for passage under the low bridges there. They were working alongside resident GWR Small Prairie 5526 and 1369.

We had mixed weather through the day with some showers but mostly crisp, clear, picturesque sunlight which brought the photographers out to relish in the conditions today for the event, even if a little chilly, and the day was full of action with the railway operating an intensive timetable of Auto trains and the railways new buffet coach in action, and great to meet some familiar and new people through the afternoon. | 02.01.2026
