Castle Combe Crashes/Highlights, Autumn Classic, 19-20/9/25

Didn't have this one on the radar but a relatively free weekend meant that I just about squeezed in the annual Castle Combe trip!

Some grand racing from this one, but not enough space here to write the review they all deserve sadly. Highlights came from the Gerry Marshall Trophy with some lovely machinery (that sadly failed noise testing after giving us some of the best sounds around Combe in decades) and arguably a better grid that what Donington produced earlier in the year. A giant grid of the Frazer Nash sports cars of the 1920s produced a photo finish for the win, and as ever the Mini 7 Racing Club put on a spectacular show at a circuit that so brilliantly compliments the style of racing found in both the Miglia and Se7en classes. You struggled really to find a grid anywhere that wasn't packed!

I have to conclude with a minor rant about this place though, as I'm rather perplexed by the recent desire to 'pull a Silverstone' with this lovely racing facility, that really needs garages and paddock updates over the enforced spectator restrictions that it seems to be receiving instead! Most of the spectator access areas were blocked off this week for some strange reason, anyone with a camera is now stood on top of each other due to new fencing around Quarry, the security personnel are far too numerous and unhelpful (and extort you for a fiver at half 11 at night!), not a single person scanned my ticket at any point across the weekend and the recovery frankly takes far too long. Said recovery on this occasion lost us an entire race after the truck pulled up at the scene of a crashed car, then drove off and did another lap for some totally bizarre reason in possibly one of the most puzzling scenes I have witnessed at a Motorsport venue in quite some time! All the venue has to show for itself in recent times is a posh looking gate and about 20ft of anti-spectator fencing, so I'm not too sure what the plans for the venue are moving forward as the drop in spectator levels certainly around Quarry from what it was a decade ago is more than visible! One of the most accessible and friendly venues the UK has for spectators, is heading in the wrong direction in terms of its updates, and that does worry me...
