Tucker - 22 Months Old GoldenDoodle - Blue Heeler Cross
Tucker is a completely outgoing dog. He loves, people, other dogs, cats and seemingly everything and everyone else. He wants to to learn and wants to work. He just loves the attention he receives from his humans. Tucker is not one of those dogs that are treat driven. So, how do we motivate him? We use a combination of words, touch, and positive emotions. And, we are slowly adding treats as a reward because he is happy. Why am I introducing treats to him? So I can lure him through learning new commands and actions. It’s key to use all forms of praise—whether it's encouraging words, physical touch, treats, toys, or positive energy—during training, especially in the moment. Why do we do these different methods simultaneously? We are trying to communicate the same message via the different senses ... touch, sight, smell, taste and sound.
The focus on balancing touch with kindness and touch can really foster trust and respect in the dog-human relationship. The emphasis on timing, consistency, and repetition is key—dogs really thrive on routine and clear communication.
During the video, you can see how happy he is working and how attentive he is when we are actively working. You can not ask for any more. He is learning to follow his leader and stay connected, and will continue to grow.
Leadership is essential for creating a balanced and happy environment for both dogs and their owners. Dogs are pack animals by nature, so they really thrive when there’s a clear, consistent structure. It gives them a sense of security, knowing their humans are in charge and can guide them through different situations.
When there’s leadership, they can relax and trust that their boundaries are respected, which also helps to reduce anxiety and unwanted behaviors. It’s amazing how much dogs take comfort in routine and knowing what’s expected of them.
Thank you,
Jim
