Religious Rituals are at the heart of what it means to be human; they enable traditions and beliefs to be transmitted and transformed from country to country and from generation to generation. They often allow us to express without words, just as photography transmits knowledge through images. I will show how new and old practices are unfolding side by side for the very first time; based on long-standing roots, new spiritual practice is growing in the dense urban places that are now home for most of the world’s population
Liz Hingley is British photographer and anthropologist specialising in visual research methods. She is a Visiting Scholar of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, an honorary research fellow of the Department of Theology and Religion at the University of Birmingham and an active member of the Migration Research Unit of University College London. Her publications include Under Gods, stories from Soho Road (2010), Shanghai, Portraits De Villes (2013) and Home Made in Smethwick (2016). Liz’s most recent work Shanghai Sacred, which made in collaboration with Professor Benoit Vermander, will be published Washington University Press in 2017. Her work has received numerous awards including The Photophilanthropy Award, Prix Virginia and the Getty Editorial Grant.
