For Piano, Advanced level of difficulty
An interval of a fourth occurs in virtually every single bar - Fourths upon fourths, with brilliant runs.
A little overwhelming, but this work is intended for a very advanced pianist/ concert performer with a formidable technique.
A distant cousin would be “ The Dance of the Robotic Cyborg” which was selected by three contestants at the Sydney International Piano Competition 2023.
Originally intended to be called “ A Quadriduotonal Boogie in Limbo “ the “Boogie in Limbo “focuses on that which is unresolved, or in limbo. The interval of a fourth on its own contains a definitive and commanding resolution of tonality, but fourths used in open, upwardly nuanced riffs and flourishes create a feeling of constant transformation, or a feeling of being in limbo, despite the strong and forceful motoric drive.
The perfect fourth interval is featured in modal music, which is subsequently used in folk music all around the world. Gustav Mahler used the interval of a fourth in his compositions, his signature projection of a feeling of being unresolved, or in limbo.
