BRADFORD PARISH #7: DENHOLME

Denholme, in the City of Bradford, is a civil parish with town status. It lies 8 miles west of Bradford city centre, 7 miles from Keighley and roughly the same distance from Halifax.

The name Denholme is probably of Viking origin. It supposedly means "a flat amongst the hillside". This is a good description of the town's geographical setting, since it is located in a broad sided valley

Which extends southward from the River Aire. However, an alternative suggestion is that Denholme was an island in an area otherwise covered by marshland. Therefore it could mean ‘the water

meadow in the valley’. Given the area has many springs and some marshy terrain in places, it seems possible. Whatever the case, Denholme is a big place – and it’s still growing

The most important family associated with Denholme is the Fosters. Many Victorian houses in the town were built by them, for workers in their local textile mills. Denholme had three

The first mill, started in 1838, was never completed and blew down in 1839. The second was larger but it burnt down in 1857.

The third has only recently been demolished. Recent years have seen the closure of other manufacturing industries in the town, including joinery and constructional timber. The majority of residents are now commuters. The Foster name though still lives on.
