On 29 April 1985, ITN's Jon Snow interviewed US President Ronald Reagan in the White House, ahead of the latter's trip to Europe to attend an economic summit in Bonn, West Germany. Snow was joined by five other journalists from nations who would be attending the summit: Fritz Pleitgen (West German TV); Gerard Saint-Paul (French TV); Toyohiro Akiyamaa (Japanese TV); Sergio Telmon (RAI - Italy); and Joseph Schlesinger (Canadian TV). In a 30 minute interview, Reagan was questioned on a range of topics including the recent vote by US Congress to cease support for the Contras, the right-wing Nicaraguan rebels fighting a guerrilla war against the leftist government of the Sandinista National Liberation Front ("Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional", FSLN). Reagan defiantly stated that the US government would not "give up" on the Contras, and accused those who opposed his administration's policy of "voting to have a totalitarian, Marxist-Leninist government here in the Americas".
