In this lecture on Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 9.16.10–19, we study the dramatic escalation of events following the murder of the great brāhmaṇa sage Jamadagni and the divine response of Lord Paraśurāma.

The Bhāgavatam describes how the sons of Kārtavīryārjuna, having lost all kṣatriya qualities, opportunistically murder Jamadagni while he is absorbed in yajña and meditation on the Supreme Lord. This act of brahma-hatyā marks a turning point, revealing the complete moral collapse of the ruling class and the grave danger of power divorced from dharma.

The verses vividly portray:

The cruelty of rulers who have abandoned brahminical culture
The suffering of the innocent, exemplified by Reṇukā’s lamentation
Paraśurāma’s transformation of personal grief into righteous resolve
Although Paraśurāma appears to act in retaliation for his father’s death, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this is only a pretext. The deeper reason for his mission is the systemic corruption of the kṣatriyas, who no longer respected the guidance of brāhmaṇas or the principles of varṇāśrama-dharma.

By eliminating the kṣatriyas twenty-one times, Lord Paraśurāma fulfills the eternal purpose of the Lord: paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām—to protect the devotees and annihilate the miscreants.

This class offers serious reflection on:

The responsibility of political and social power
The consequences of disrespecting spiritual authority
Why divine intervention becomes inevitable when governments turn sinful
Paraśurāma as the timeless principle of correction in human society
