2024 Mongoose Scan BMX Overview, ft. Matty Cranmer | Mongoose

The Mongoose Scan series is a range of beginner freestyle BMX bikes for young riders looking to turn their fascination with the sport into a diehard passion for hitting the skatepark or pump track. In this video, Mongoose pro athlete Matty Cranmer walks through each of the four models: the Scan XS, Scan 18, Scan 2.0, and Scan 4.0.

Each Scan BMX bike is sized for a particular point in the beginning rider’s journey, so they can find the right fit for where they’re at. While each Scan features a Hi-Ten steel frame and fork with modern BMX geometry, each model adds some new features to deliver performance and durability as the rider levels up.

The Scan XS is a bike for riders who are just getting comfortable riding. It features a one-piece crank with a 36T chainring and 16T freewheel, a rear V-brake with an added coaster brake for reliable stopping, and wide 2.125-inch tires for rolling around in style.

The Scan 18 is a dedicated introductory BMX bike with a one-piece crank with a 32T chainring and 16T freewheel, as well as wide 2.4-inch tires on 18-inch wheels for added traction. It features a rear V-brake only, so riders learn to rely on their handbrake for stopping and control. This bike is meant for their initiation into the local skatepark or pump track.

The Scan 2.0 adds a microdrive with a one-piece crank, 25T chainring, and 9T cassette to give you more sprocket clearance when learning tricks. It also replaces the V-brake with an aluminum U-brake that’s more suited to freestyle riding with increased stopping power.

The Scan 4.0 tops out the line with the addition of a three-piece tubular chromoly crank and aluminum double-wall rims for a bike that lets you go all out dialing in your tricks at the park!
