Walking Among Snow Geese

Winter is coming, and the Lesser Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens) migrate south from Wrangel Island of Russia to the Pacific Coast of North America. Flocks after flocks of geese arrive at a park in a suburban neighborhood, turning the green turf into snow white.
Immersing oneself in the honking cacophony of thousands of snow geese and watching them take flight is such a spectacular and awe-inspiring experience!
The snow-white bodied birds are adults, with black-tipped wings, and the gray ones are juveniles. The flocks either rest after their long journey (over 3,700km or 2,300 miles!) or keep themselves busy, grazing the grass and digging for the underground stems (rhizomes).
The Wrangle Island subgroup of snow geese are considered critical. They are the only remaining snow geese breeding in Asia. But the population is rapidly growing. Last year, the population of snow geese in the videoed suburban area peaked at 112,000 birds!
